Kansas City Royals outfielder Kyle Isbel left Tuesday’s 5-3 victory over the Texas Rangers with a plantar fascia injury in his left foot.
In the seventh inning, Isbel reached base with a single but came up limping as he made the turn toward second. He dove back into first base and grimaced in pain.
Manager Matt Quatraro and members of the Royals’ medical staff came out of the dugout to assist. Isbel walked off the field on his own power, but Tyler Tolbert replaced him in the game.
Afterward, Quatraro provided an update.
“He’s been playing with a sore foot for quite a while,” Quatraro said of Isbel. “But we won’t know the severity of it until we get a scan tomorrow.”
Isbel finished 1 for 2 at the plate. Tolbert played the final two innings in center field as the Royals won and improved to 28-39.
Isbel is the latest Royals player to be sidelined by an injury this year. Second baseman Jonathan India (shoulder) is likely out for the remainder of the season. Starting pitchers Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic are dealing with elbow injuries and relievers Carlos Estévez and Nick Mears are out with right-shoulder injuries.
“It’s painful and he has been dealing with it,” Quatraro said of Isbel. “And for whatever reason, probably that explosiveness bugged him.”
Isbel is hitting .244 with three homers and 11 RBIs this season.
