Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have been divorced since 2018, and the impact still resonates with the 54-year-old actress.
Garner, who is promoting her role in the upcoming Peacock series, The Five Star Weekend, spoke to Emmys magazine about how she related to her middle-aged character.

“By the time you’re in the middle of your life, some s—t has gone down,” she explained. “So, they all show up with hurt and grief. And in the privacy and the messiness of just sitting in each other’s stew of sisterhood, there’s room for all of it to come out and be explored.”
That small comment feels like a dig at Affleck, whose alleged affair with the nanny and his substance abuse problems were the catalyst for the end of their marriage. This isn’t the first time Garner hinted that her ex’s issues changed the entire course of her life.
“When my kids were little, I worked so little, and then we had such an upheaval in our family, that I really hardly worked for a long time,” she said of taking a step back in her career during a chaotic time to InStyle recently.
And of course, there is her iconic interview with Vanity Fair in February 2016 that was conducted while they were separated — Garner didn’t hold back then.
“I didn’t marry the big fat movie star; I married him,” she candidly shared. “And I would go back and remake that decision. I ran down the beach to him, and I would again. You can’t have these three babies and so much of what we had. He’s the love of my life. What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”
While Garner is a bit more reserved in her discussion of Affleck in 2026 — probably to protect their kids, Violet, 20, Finn, 17, and Samuel, 13 – it’s pretty clear that their divorce hurt her deeply.
She felt it then, and she still feels it now.
