Mystery royal bodyguard finally recognised in King's Birthday Honours

One of the King’s most trusted protection officers has released
an emotional statement after bringing to a close a policing career
spanning more than three decades.

Jagjivan Singh Khangura MVO, known to colleagues and friends as
“Jag”, recently stepped down following more than 30 years of
service with the Metropolitan Police, including over two decades
within Royalty and Specialist Protection.

Mr Khangura, who until recently served as King Charles III’s
personal head of security, said he was leaving with “the happiest
of memories” after a career dedicated to protecting the Royal
Family and the public.

In a statement following his retirement, he said: “It’s been a
privilege to serve and represent my colleagues and my community in
role.

“I leave with the happiest of memories and the utmost respect
for all those that serve and sacrifice for King and country.”

The remarks offer a rare glimpse into the thoughts of a man who
spent much of his professional life working behind the scenes, away
from public attention, while overseeing the security of the
Monarch.

The Metropolitan Police paid tribute to Mr Khangura’s
distinguished service, describing his contribution as
exceptional.

A spokesperson said he had delivered more than 30 years of
outstanding policing service, including over 20 years within
Royalty and Specialist Protection.

His work supporting the Royal Household was praised as being of
“the highest standard”, demonstrating professionalism, discretion
and a deep commitment to public safety.

Among the most significant events of his career were the funeral
of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 and the Coronation of King
Charles III the following year.

The Metropolitan Police said Mr Khangura played a critical role
in planning and delivering security for both historic occasions,
helping to ensure the safety of those involved while maintaining
public confidence during events of immense national importance.

His leadership was also credited with strengthening specialist
policing capabilities through his commitment to operational
excellence, collaboration and the development of future
officers.

Mr Khangura was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order
(MVO)
in the King’s Birthday Honours List for services to
royalty and specialist protection.

The Royal Victorian Order is bestowed personally by the
Sovereign and recognises distinguished personal service to the
Monarch and the Royal Family.

Although little was publicly known about Mr Khangura during his
years in royal protection, his identity emerged following his
retirement from royal duties, when colleagues and friends gathered
to celebrate the conclusion of an extraordinary career.

Businessman James Eden, who attended the event, described him as
“simply one of the finest people you will ever meet” and praised
his professionalism, loyalty and dedication.

For more than two decades, Jag Khangura helped protect the Royal
Family through some of the most significant moments in modern
British history.

Now, after a lifetime of public service, he leaves with the
gratitude of colleagues, the respect of the Royal Household and a
personal honour bestowed by the King himself.
