Commissioning opportunity: new comedy entertainment format for BBC iPlayer and BBC Two

BBC Entertainment Commissioning is offering an exciting opportunity to redefine comedy entertainment for BBC iPlayer and BBC Two post-watershed. We’re looking for a brand new and original format as a series of 10 x 30minute episodes that could be stripped across two weeks.

We’re after a format-first idea that prioritises funny moments and spontaneity over heavy scripting or topicality. It should feel infectiously funny, fresh, and bold – a show that audiences can binge on iPlayer, watch multiple episodes of in one sitting, or dip into at random. It should feel unmissable and shareable, with the potential to become an appointment-to-view hit.

We’re not looking for the traditional shows that have occupied this space historically.

Tonally, think the wit and playfulness of Taskmaster, Would I Lie to You?, Last One Laughing, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, or The Roast of the Sidemen – but at lower cost, so really think about the efficiency of your production model, ie Richard Osman’s House of Games or The Traitors Uncloaked.

The show should be pure fun, rooted in universal themes and banter. Make us laugh.

We will shortlist ideas for paid development, with the intention of commissioning one full series.

Cast and contributors

We’re seeking a mix of recognisable and rising comedy voices or well-known faces with a comedic tone and genuine chemistry. At least one name should have real audience pull to grab viewers’ attention – either leading or supporting as part of the cast.

Audience

We want to appeal to younger audiences aged 25-45, while remaining accessible to BBC Two’s loyal comedy loving fanbase of 45+.

Production model

Throw out the instruction manual. We want you to rethink how comedy entertainment is made.

You’ll need a fast turnaround production model, filming multiple shows a day without impacting quality. Editorial and production decisions should support cost efficiency and be built into the model from the outset.

Think about learnings from digital platforms that could be applied here.

Eligibility criteria

Companies must:

be a UK-based production company
be eligible for a PiCoS account
have a proven track record of delivering high-volume, fast turnaround shows or be working with a production company partner who does

Budget

The total BBC Licence Fee available is £750,000 for 10 x 30’ episodes (£75,000 per ep.) which will be contracted on the BBC’s standard prevailing Terms of Trade.

Shortlisted ideas will be given paid development.
