Wheeling, W.V. — Pride flags and celebration filled the plaza in Wheeling on Saturday as The Friendlier City Project hosted its fourth annual Pride on the Plaza.
Attendees were able to visit nearly 40 vendors and food trucks, and enjoy live entertainment, a magician and more.
Mikaya Green, co-founder and chair of The Friendlier City Project, said West Virginia was ranked the least safe place in the United States for the LGBTQ-plus community. She said events like Pride on the Plaza are important to show residents what pride is about.
“I think that having events like this are important, especially in a state like West Virginia, to show that we’re here, the community is supporting us, we have tons of sponsors. So yes, it was voted the most unsafe state, but we’re here today, we’re loud, and we’re having a great time,” Green said.
The Friendlier City Project will host several other activities this month. More information is available at wtov9.com and on the group’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/thefriendliercityproject.
