PROVINCETOWN ― Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick joined their adult children at Provincetown Town Hall Sunday night for a sold-out screening of their horror-comedy film, “Family Movie.”
At least one Provincetown business, Joe Coffee on Commercial Street, posted a photo of the couple to their Facebook and Instagram pages Sunday, with “Look who came in for a @joecoffeeptown today” pasted atop the image and captioned “We hope you loved your cafe mocha and cappuccino today !”
“Family Movie,” not yet available for streaming, was the closing selection for this year’s 38th annual Provincetown International Film Festival.
“We wanted it to be scary, but we wanted it to be funny and heartwarming,” Sedgwick said during a Q&A after Sunday’s screening, “and I think that we thought that it was going to be more of a horror movie than it is, but we wanted to make sure that the kills were fun.”

The film is co-directed and produced by Bacon and Sedgwick, who starred in it with their kids, actor Sosie Bacon (“Smile,” “13 Reasons Why”) and heavy metal music composer Travis Bacon.
The movie is about a filmmaking family that ends up in an actual horror movie when a dead body shows up on their set. Under intense financial pressure to finish their movie, they cover up the murder and keep filming.
“Family Movie” was filmed at a farmhouse in Round Top, Texas, about half-way between Houston and Austin. The movie had its world premiere on March 13 at the SXSW (South by Southwest) Film & TV Festival in Austin.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick find their seats at Provincetown Town Hall Sunday, June 14, for the screening of their “Family Movie,” a horror-comedy that was the closing film iof the 28th annual Provincetown International Film Festival.
Animal lovers Bacon and Sedgwick mentioned how much they enjoyed filming at the farm, especially working with their goat co-star, who plays a small but crucial role.
The goat “was so well-behaved it wouldn’t bolt out when it was supposed to break through the gate. We needed to use a stunt goat,” Sedgwick said.
IMDB lists “Family Movie” as meta-horror, defined as a self-aware film that knows and acknowledges the conventions of classic horror. Bacon said Sunday night that “Family Movie” is full of Easter eggs that pay tribute to classic horror films.
A big one of those? The supporting cast of “Family Movie” includes Jackie Earle Haley (Kelly Leak in “The Bad News Bears”) who played Freddy Kruger in the remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
