Disclosure Day ends by establishing an entire universe of possibilities ahead of its characters — and some members of the cast already have ideas for where the story could go in a follow-up movie.
Steven Spielberg‘s latest film ends with its heroes, Margaret (Emily Blunt), Daniel (Josh O’Connor), and Hugo (Colman Domingo), successfully broadcasting decades’ worth of evidence of alien life to the entire world, definitively proving that we are not alone in the universe. Their victory comes despite the best efforts of Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), the head of the government contracting group Wardex, who has attempted to keep the existence of aliens hidden from the public.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Firth suggests that there’s much more to Scanlon’s story that he’d like to tell. “The mission’s clearly over for me,” he says of his character’s exhausted defeat at the end of the film. “I’ve got my little army, I mean, I think I’m smart enough to know that we’re beyond stopping it now. I’d like to think there’s enough ambiguity there for the sequel. And I don’t mean that as glibly as it might sound.”
Firth believes that Scanlon’s journey is far from over. “I’m curious to know what Scanlon’s next chapter is,” he says. “I don’t think it feels entirely resolved. The way I saw it, it wasn’t that Scanlon just gets it, and he’s going to join the other guys. But I think he’s moved by what he sees, and I think that’s something that maybe he’s always known.”
The King’s Speech star thinks Scanlon has compartmentalized some aspects of his personality, which may finally surface now that the truth has been publicized. “I think in order to do some pretty inhumane things and to be that deceitful, he’s had to park a part of himself, and maybe that’s what he’s not having to fight anymore at that moment at the end,” he says.
Domingo tells EW that he’d like to explore the future and the past of Disclosure Day‘s world. “I think that there’s moments before and after that I’d be curious about,” he says. “They haven’t alluded to it, but I feel like because I know that David [Koepp] and Steven really mapped this out, I’m sure they had to write an incredible backstory for Hugo, for Emily’s character, for Josh’s character, and for Colin’s.”
The Rustin actor thinks that witnessing the implosion of Wardex and the full disclosure of alien life presents ample opportunities for further narrative developments. “What happens to the government?” he wonders. “What happens to religion? What happens to anything that we know? I’m very curious about that. I’m actually excited as I’ve been talking about it. The idea that there’s still more, and also the idea that you can go backwards and forwards with the story, and maybe it does that in one film.”

O’Connor hasn’t thought much about the idea of a sequel, but he’s open to the possibility of one. “You never know,” he says. “This was the film, and I think it sufficiently tells the story, but I think there’s more — a second installment would be fascinating for sure.”
He adds, “I’d like to see another installment just to see how we respond, and what else is in that message [from the aliens].”

Blunt isn’t sure whether a sequel is on the horizon. “I mean, who knows?” she says. “Listen, we would all be beside ourselves to get back together and be with Steven again. But we’ll have to see just how this story hits people and if it’s wanted.”
She continues, “I think there’s way more room for discovery in this life-or-death race between those who believe the truth belongs to people and the forces who are trying to keep the secrets concealed. I think there’s more to explore there.”
Disclosure Day is now playing in theaters.
