Britney Spears‘ biopic is still in limbo despite being green lit — and a source says it’ll stay that way unless she can pull herself together and show producers she’s serious about fixing her life.
“Universal Pictures is in a very tricky situation,” the source tells Star. “They’re looking at the real numbers on the Michael biopic and the profits rolling in on that movie are truly stunning. It’s been a license to make money.”
However, “the key to that project was presenting a happy ending to [Michael Jackson‘s] story that left fans humming the music and dancing when they left the theaters,” notes the source. “They’d like the same dynamic with the Britney movie, and they thought they had it when they bought the rights to her book [The Woman In Me] not long after her conservatorship ended.”
Then, on Wednesday, May 4, Spears, 44, was arrested in Ventura, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The “Toxic” singer, who agreed to plead guilty to a wet reckless, voluntarily sought treatment following her arrest, only to make headlines again shortly after leaving the facility.
As Star previously reported, entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider claims he saw Spears “screaming and barking” at a restaurant in Sherman Oaks, California, on Wednesday, May 13.
“With Britney’s personal struggles continuing, it would be impossible … to film and release a movie while she is still going through all of that stuff,” reveals the source. “Britney needs to get better and she needs to re-engage with the project for it to move forward.”
Until then, “they’re stuck sitting on their hands,” the source says. “Nobody’s giving up on the project yet but with Britney’s personal story in the unresolved state it’s in at the moment, it’s a difficult time for the project.”
