Garner shares Violet, Fin, and Samuel with her ex-husband, Ben Affleck.
Jennifer Garner didn’t ask for gifts this past Mother’s Day. In her new cover interview for Better Homes & Gardens’s July/August issue, the actress revealed the unique request she had for her three children, Violet, Fin, and Samuel, instead.
Speaking to BHG, Garner said that she asked her kids to let her read aloud from their favorite childhood books one more time. “They’re like, ‘Mom.’ And I’m like, ‘I know, but I think I need that. You have to let me,'” she explained.

Garner shares her kids with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, to whom she was married from 2005 to 2018.
Elsewhere in the interview, the 13 Going on 30 star discussed what she hopes Violet, Fin, and Samuel will take from their childhoods. “I hope they value humor,” Garner said. “Laughing your way through it, loving people through it, finding what’s funny. And I hope they take music and books [with them].”

The actress also went on to share two important lessons she learned from her mom and dad: “They met people assuming the best, assuming they will love them and receive love from them. I think that’s a gift,” said Garner.
Her parents also taught her not to be too hard on herself. “If you mess up, if you got out of shape, if you burned something, if you forgot to pick your kid up—which I did the other day—just say, ‘Whoops,'” Garner continued. “Get past beating yourself up as quickly as possible. It doesn’t help.”
With Garner’s eldest child out of the house, family dynamics have shifted, similar to when her own sister, Melissa, went off to college.
“We miss her a lot,” Garner said of 20-year-old Violet. “When [she] calls or FaceTimes, we’re all crowded around the phone.”
“I remember when my big sister left, my little sister and I connected in a different way,” Garner added. “My mom and I connected in a different way. I see that happening [with Fin and Sam], and there’s sweetness in that.”
