Lionel Richie wants to protect his voice in the age of AI.
According to intellectual property attorney Josh Gerben, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter filed four trademark applications on an intent-to-use basis to protect the sound of his voice. The filing seeks protection for the phrases “Hello, Is It Me You’re Looking For?” “Say You, Say Me,” “Easy Like Sunday Morning,” and “All Night Long.”
“The applications that Richie filed indicate that the sounds will eventually be used in connection with providing music and entertainment information, videos, and news about a musical artist,” Gerben wrote.
Gerben said that Richie would have to prove that the sound or lyrics are being used as a brand identifier for the aforementioned services, rather than merely being a phrase from a song.
Gerben also mentioned that the intent of the applications is to protect his voice in the AI era, as the trademark filing could prevent his voice from being used or a similar sound from being produced.
“If Richie were able to obtain registrations for these sound marks, it could provide another layer of protection against AI-generated content that sounds enough like him to make consumers believe he was involved,” Gerben said.
Richie isn’t the only artist looking to protect his or her voice and work from AI use. Taylor Swift also filed trademark applications in April for two phrases, one of which is “Hey, it’s Taylor Swift, and you can listen to my new album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl,’ on demand, on Amazon Music Unlimited,” celebrity.land reports. She also filed a trademark to protect her image, particularly her image in a bodysuit holding a pink guitar.
“Attempting to register a celebrity’s spoken voice is a new use of trademark registration that has not been tested in court before,” Gerben noted, per celebrity.land.
Matthew McConaughey has also filed trademarks to protect his image and voice. Gerben sees this as a test for “new theories on how trademark law will work in the AI age.”
