The Wimbledon Championships are fast approaching – and while spectators are keen to see what happens on court, the off-court fashion will be just as closely watched.

The royal family has a long-standing relationship with Wimbledon – the late Queen Elizabeth II became a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), where Wimbledon is held, in 1952 – and now that role is held by the Princess of Wales.

Kate and her children are keen tennis fans, so will likely make appearances at this year’s Championships, taking their place in the royal box – as so many have done before them.

Here’s a look back at royal courtside fashion, ahead of the Championships kicking off on June 29…

1. Queen Elizabeth II

Elizabeth II’s first appearance at Wimbledon as Queen in 1957 was a stylish one. She leaned into a popular Fifties silhouette: a midi style with a cinched waist and full skirt.

The floral print was perfect for the summer event, and she completed the look with her signature accessories: strings of pearls, gloves and a handbag.

2. Diana, Princess of Wales

Like the late Queen, Diana’s Wimbledon outfits throughout the years were a reflection of changing fashions. Throughout the Eighties, she wore outfits with big shoulders and statement collars, but her style shifted in the Nineties.

At the 1994 Wimbledon men’s singles final – which was won by American player Pete Sampras – Diana donned a memorable bright red ensemble. The sleeveless shirt dress by British fashion designer Tomasz Starzewski signalled her style moving in a more minimalist direction, compared to the bold prints she often wore in the Eighties.

But this isn’t to say it was boring: the striking colour, combined with the gold detailing – giving it an almost military feel – meant she stood out from the crowd, and she adeptly accessorised the look with chunky gold jewellery.

3. Catherine, Princess of Wales

The Princess of Wales has been a patron of the AELTC since 2016, meaning she’s a familiar face at Wimbledon – and it’s been the site of some of her most best fashion moments.

In 2016, she wore one of her favourite designers: London-based Roksanda. The bright and summery yellow midi dress had short sleeves and white panels to add a bit of contrast.

Bright, block colours later became something of a staple for Kate at Wimbledon, with the royal modelling everything from electric purples to vivid greens for her courtside fashion.

4. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

The Duchess of Sussex watched friend Serena Williams play in the 2018 women’s singles final in her signature, relaxed-yet-chic style. Instead of wearing a structured dress, she donned a blue and white Ralph Lauren shirt, paired with wide-leg white trousers.

Stripes are something of a Wimbledon fashion mainstay, but Meghan gave the look her own spin with a slightly oversized, menswear-inspired silhouette, and she topped the look off with a white straw hat and sunglasses.

5. The Princess of Wales (again)

It’s no surprise Kate pops up on this list for a second time, considering how many major style moments she’s given us at the Championships.

Her 2023 ensemble was particularly interesting for how different it was from her regular Wimbledon fashion. Instead of a modern silhouette and clean lines, she wore an Eighties-inspired outfit: a pale green Balmain blazer with structured shoulders, statement white buttons and a tennis-inspired white pleated midaxi skirt.

6. Queen Camilla

The Queen is more of a reserved dresser at Wimbledon, but she adds interest to her looks with subtle detailing.

Take her outfit for the 2024 Championships, when she wore a neutral midi dress by Anna Valentine. The long-sleeved, belted shape is classic for Camilla, but she added whimsy with images of giraffes delicately embroidered on the flowing skirt.

7. Princess Charlotte

Princess Charlotte attended her first Wimbledon in 2023, and has returned every year since. In 2025, she watched Jannik Sinner defeat Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final along with her family, and met the winner afterwards.

Charlotte kept her look simple and summery, wearing a floaty white dress with a ruffled neckline and black piping – accessorised with tortoiseshell sunglasses.

Meanwhile, Kate wore a classic Wimbledon outfit: a bright blue midaxi dress, again by Roksanda.
