Warner Music India has entered into a partnership with Kolkata-headquartered media conglomerate SVF Entertainment to gain a foothold in the Bengali music market.
SVF Entertainment, which has produced over 180 movies and 30 TV shows in Bengali since its foundation in 1995, runs the video-streaming platform and Hoichoi and the record label SVF Music.
With an extensive catalogue of both soundtracks as well as pop and devotional music spanning more than 2,000 songs, and a 70% market share, SVF Music division is said to be India’s largest Bengali-language label.
Its releases include 80% of film composer and singer-songwriter Anupam Roy’s discography until date as well tracks by music director Jeet Gannguli and playback singers Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal.
“Some of India’s most enduring cultural movements have emerged from Bengal, and its music continues to inspire generations across borders,” says Warner Music India managing director Jay Mehta.
“SVF has been instrumental in building that legacy, making it the ideal partner as we cement our commitment to regional music in India.”
The major’s tie-up with SVF follows its investments and distribution deals with companies specialising in music made in south Indian languages (Divo, in which it acquired a majority stake) as well as in Punjabi, Haryanvi and Bhojpuri (EYP Creations, Global Music Junction, Sky Digital and Ziiki Media).
As with all those partnerships the aim, says Mehta, is to take Bengali music “to the global stage” and “reach listeners worldwide” with SVF Entertainment.
