SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones says it’s “only fair” that the billionaire head of Dell Technologies, Michael Dell, helps foot the bill for the city’s $1.3 billion arena that will be home to the Spurs.
“Normal folks in the community have routinely asked, be it at public comment or at other forums, ‘Why can’t we ask them (billionaires) to pay more.’ So, I in fact did that,” Jones told the San Antonio Express-News.
Dell is an investor in the Spurs franchise and recently became part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. Dell stands at No. 6 on Forbes’ list of the top billionaires in the world as of June 17, 2026, and he has a net worth of $236.3 billion.
The arena — part of the larger Project Marvel, which includes an entertainment district in downtown San Antonio — has been a controversial subject since it was announced. Some welcome the endeavor, citing an economic boost to the city, while others are critical of the cost.
Jones pushed for an independent economic study to be done on the project by an entity with no ties to the Spurs. This was before City Council ultimately voted 7-4 to move forward with the project. The Spurs have committed at least $500 million in funding, and Bexar County voters approved Propositions A and B to put $503 million towards the project, KENS 5 News reports.
