If you are a young British actor, it’s inevitable that people will debate your credentials as a potential James Bond. We don’t make these rules, but we sure do report on them. And when it comes to our latest cover star, Tom Holland… well, many would like to see the star of the Spider-Man movies take the lead as 007.
There have been a few changes to the Bond franchise of late. Daniel Craig has obviously left the role. Barbara Broccoli, longtime custodian of the films, has ducked out, too. Now Amazon is in control, and Denis Villeneuve has been announced as the director. So, what about Holland? Is he interested?
“I mean, of course, I’m young and British, and, you know, I’ve always been a huge fan of espionage movies,” he told us in an interview for the July/August issue of Esquire. “I’ve grown up with all of the Bond films, and I remember going to see Casino Royale for my birthday.”
We should also note that his partner, Zendaya, has starred in Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Dune movies. Holland does have a concern however.
“The thing I’ve found really difficult is that Amy Pascal is producing that movie,” he says. Holland describes the Spider-Man producer as his “absolute ride or die.” He continues: “She has shepherded me through this process in such an amazing way,” he adds. “I am trying to be respectful of my relationship with her and that this is a professional thing. I don’t want to overstep in any way. So I don’t know, but it’s something I do think about.”
Still, he’s eager. Even after taking on as huge a franchise as Spider-Man.
He says: “I think if you were lucky enough to get that job, like, who am I to turn my nose up at the most iconic British character in modern cinema?”
