American soccer fans are not only singing the praises of the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) after its 2-0 World Cup victory over Australia on Friday, they’re also singing a classic John Denver song.
After the team’s victory, the nearly 70,000 fans at Seattle’s Lumen Field broke out in song, specifically Denver’s 1971 smash, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”
Although the game took place in Washington State and the song is set in West Virginia, the crowd was loud and proud as you can see in the video below.
Although soccer teams commonly adopt classic songs as anthems, “Country Roads” isn’t the official team song of the USMNT.
In fact, it owes its presence at the World Cup to Scottish fans who’ve taken to singing “Country Roads” when the Scottish team plays ― and pretty much every other chance they get, according to Fox26 Houston.
Still, based on the number of social media posts from fans of the American team, it looks like it has been adopted as the anthem anyway.
