Inspired by the famous artwork Love is in the Bin, which sold for over $20 million despite being partially destroyed, YouTuber Stanley Chen decided to test whether people would view ordinary objects as valuable art if they were presented in the right way. He purchased inexpensive IKEA furniture and cheap decorative pieces, gave them artistic titles, and created a fake modern art gallery called “Bendan,” a Chinese word meaning “fool.” To make the exhibition appear prestigious, he hired bodyguards, carefully staged the gallery, and worked with a professional artist to help create convincing displays. The goal was not to sell the artwork but to see whether art collectors, critics, and enthusiasts would assign deep meaning to objects that were intentionally chosen for being ordinary and inexpensive.
The exhibition also featured absurd performance-art pieces designed to imitate the style of avant-garde modern art. Stanley and his collaborators threw cheese and paint at each other, smashed each other’s shins with scooters, and performed other seemingly random acts while presenting them as profound expressions of emotion, struggle, and the human condition. When visitors attended the gallery, many took the works seriously and offered detailed interpretations, finding symbolism and personal meaning in pieces that had been created as part of the experiment. Some viewers said the artwork reminded them of childhood memories, while others praised the exhibition and rated it highly, with one person even giving it a perfect score. By the end, the experiment demonstrated how strongly presentation, context, and perceived prestige can influence the way people judge art, leading people to find significance in works they might otherwise dismiss if they knew the true story behind them.
