Scott Hoying and Mark Hoying‘s dreams have come true: their baby girl has arrived.
The Pentatonix singer and his husband welcomed their baby girl via surrogate on Wednesday, June 3.
“It really was beautiful. It was this overwhelming flashback of all these memories growing up and being like, ‘Am I going to find love? Is gay marriage going to be legal? Am I going to be able to have a kid?’ ” Scott, 34, tells PEOPLE.
He adds, “The process of us having a child took four or five years. It’s been a long time coming and just looking at her, I started crying because it was just such a beautiful thing that I feel really, really lucky.”
Similar to their extravagant sex reveal video, Scott and Mark filmed a unique video for her special name: Birdie James.

“The first song I ever learned to sing when I was a little, little kid was ‘Put On a Happy Face,’ from Bye Bye Birdie,” Scott says, adding that Mark’s middle name is James. “We wanted something that was musical, but not too on the nose. And we also just loved that it felt… Feels like it could work at any age.”
The arrival of their first baby girl was a long time coming — and the couple couldn’t have done it without Scott’s sister, who volunteered to be their egg donor.
“I literally cannot believe how selfless she is. She was so passionate about doing it,” he says of his sister Lauren. “I love my sister so much, and I cannot thank her enough for giving the gift of life.”
There was a time when Scott thought a baby wouldn’t be in the cards after coming out as gay in high school. Now that he has Birdie, he wants to be an example.
“I just wish that I had more idols that were queer and gay in media growing up that I could see families and be like, ‘Oh, my gosh, there’s an example of something I can have,’ ” he says. “There wasn’t really a lot of that growing up. That’s why it’s really important for us that we are always posting our love… We always want to just show we are thriving, we are in love, and we have a beautiful baby, and it’s possible. And it also hopefully moves the needle for people who are like, ‘Gay, people shouldn’t be parents.'”

Mark adds, “I think what’s so beautiful about being gay parents is that you make the active decision together that you want to start a family. This wasn’t a light decision we made. I just feel like the most grateful person in the world because I get to share this experience with the love of my life, the person I know is the best dad in the whole world.”
Less than a month since her arrival, Scott and Mark are now soaking in the little moments with their baby girl. Soon enough, she’ll be on the road for the annual Pentatonix Christmas tour, but until then, it’s living room dance parties and lullabies.
“Scott will sing to Birdie at the piano, and he’ll play music for her. It calms her down so much,” Mark says.
Scott adds with a smile, “I’m trying to manifest her being a singer. She can be whatever she wants to be. But I feel like every single day it’ll be in her psyche.”
