Zoey Deutch felt “very hesitant” to make a romcom for many years.

The 31-year-old actress has returned to the romcom genre to star in Voicemails for Isabelle, the new Netflix film about an aspiring baker navigating loss after the death of her sister – but Zoey admits that she was initially hesitant to make another romcom.
The actress – who previously starred in Set It Up, the 2018 romcom – told People: “I’m, quite frankly, very hesitant to do movies of this genre, and the reason that I wanted to do this one was because it felt deep and about grief and about love after loss and about sisters.
“I was reluctant to do another one, for sure, but I feel super grateful and couldn’t love this movie more.”
Voicemails for Isabelle has the theme of romance at its core. But Zoey was ultimately drawn to the film’s exploration of sisterhood.
She explained: “I totally fell in love with the element of the sister love story.
“My sister is my favourite person in the world, my best friend, and it really moved me. I thought it was funny and romantic, but very deep and heart-wrenching.”
Zoey also feels she’s entered a “new era” in her career.
The actress said: “I’m not 22 anymore. I feel much more aligned and grounded, and I also feel like I’m in a second chapter or new era of my career. And I just feel really inspired and excited and a lot less anxious, which is nice to feel, because I spent most of my life just identifying as an incredibly anxious person, so I feel very different.”
Earlier this year, Zoey hailed Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass as the “funniest” thing she’s ever read.
The actress starred alongside the likes of Jon Hamm, John Slattery, and Sabrina Impacciatore in the comedy movie, and Zoe revealed that she jumped at the chance to appear in the film.
The Hollywood star told Deadline: “Why wouldn’t I want to be a part of this amazing, ridiculous, incredible movie?
“I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again — I read the script and thought it was the funniest thing I’ve ever read. And I feel really lucky that I got to work with all of these guys and these two collaborators [Wain and Marino] and Jon Hamm.”
