On October 16, 2024, Liam Payne tragically died after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was just 31 years old.
In the wake of his death, it was revealed that Payne, the former One Direction member and successful solo artist, died without a will. When someone dies without a will, legally known as dying “intestate,” the process of determining who inherits what is often litigious, expensive, complicated, and drawn out. In Payne’s case, the question was especially significant because he left behind a large fortune built from music royalties, real estate, personal assets, and years of global pop stardom.
Now, 20 months later, that process has reached a simple conclusion: Liam Payne’s 9-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne, has been named the sole beneficiary of his late father’s estate.
According to newly revealed court documents, Bear will inherit $29,007,998. Some of the money can reportedly be used now for Bear’s benefit, while the majority will be held in trust until he turns 18.

Payne shared Bear with singer Cheryl, formerly known as Cheryl Cole and Cheryl Tweedy. Because Payne was unmarried at the time of his death and had no surviving spouse or civil partner, the inheritance rules in England and Wales pointed to his only child. Cheryl and music industry attorney Richard Mark Bray were previously named administrators of the estate, giving them authority to manage and preserve Payne’s assets while the legal process moved forward.
The new court documents seen by People Magazine clarify what had been expected since probate filings first surfaced in May 2025. Those earlier filings showed that Payne left behind an estate worth approximately £28.6 million gross, equal to around $38 million at the time. After debts and expenses, the net value was listed at £24.3 million, or approximately $32.2 million.
The newly reported $29 million inheritance figure appears to reflect additional accounting, costs, currency movement, estate administration, or other adjustments since those earlier probate figures were made public.
Payne’s estate reportedly includes property, music royalties, personal assets, and a five-bedroom home in England. TMZ also reported that Kate Cassidy, Payne’s girlfriend at the time of his death, does not intend to make a claim against the estate.
The financial outcome is straightforward, but the circumstances around it remain deeply sad. Payne became famous as one-fifth of One Direction, the boy band formed on “The X Factor” in 2010 with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. The group finished third on the show, but quickly became one of the biggest pop acts in the world.
One Direction went on to sell more than 20 million albums worldwide and generated enormous touring revenue. Their “Where We Are” Tour alone grossed $282 million, making it one of the highest-grossing tours ever by a vocal group. After the band went on hiatus in 2016, Payne launched a solo career, releasing the hit single “Strip That Down” and his debut album “LP1.”
