Why Appalachian music still echoes through West Virginia's New River Gorge

GRANDVIEW, W.Va. — Most visitors come to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve to hike its rugged trails, paddle its legendary whitewater, or stand in awe at the sweeping views from Grandview. But on Tuesday evening, attention turns from the landscape to the people whose songs, stories, and traditions have echoed through these mountains for generations.

The setting is fitting. The Cliffside Amphitheater has long been one of West Virginia’s premier outdoor performance venues. Each summer, Theatre West Virginia brings the stage to life with Honey in the Rock, the state’s official outdoor drama chronicling West Virginia’s birth during the Civil War, and Hatfields & McCoys, a musical based on America’s most famous family feud. Together with Sounds of Appalachia, the productions have made Grandview a leading destination for outdoor theater and Appalachian culture.

The National Park Service, Theatre West Virginia, and Friends of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve will present the annual Sounds of Appalachia program on June 30 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Cliffside Amphitheater at Grandview. Admission is free.

More than a concert, the evening celebrates the music, storytelling, dance, and traditions that shaped southern West Virginia and the communities that once flourished throughout the New River Gorge, according to Eve West, the park’s chief of interpretation.

New River Gorge Appalachian Music

Long before New River Gorge became one of the nation’s newest national parks, its steep valleys echoed with fiddle tunes, ballads, gospel hymns, and banjo music performed at churches, schools, company towns, and family gatherings.

The region’s musical heritage reflects centuries of cultural exchange among Scots-Irish settlers, African American musicians, and other communities whose traditions blended into a distinctly Appalachian sound. Those influences remain woven into the identity of southern West Virginia today.

As the National Park Service continues to expand its interpretation of the gorge’s history, programs such as Sounds of Appalachia highlight not only the area’s spectacular scenery but also the people whose music, storytelling, and traditions continue to define the region.

This year’s program also recognizes the approaching 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding by exploring the New River Gorge area’s contributions to American history and culture.

Music, History, and Living Traditions

The evening begins with a park ranger presentation on the roots and significance of Appalachian music in the New River Gorge, followed by performances by local musicians and living history interpreters.

Scheduled performers include Doris Fields, Thomas Jude, the traditional string band Woodbine, and living historian Mary Dailey, who portrays Minnie Reed, helping bring Appalachian history to life through music and storytelling.

Together, the performances offer visitors a chance to experience traditions passed down through generations across the mountains of southern West Virginia.

Explore Grandview Before The Music Begins

Perched high above one of the New River Gorge’s deepest sections, Grandview has welcomed visitors for generations, offering panoramic views, hiking trails, and outdoor performances that celebrate the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

The Cliffside Amphitheater, home to Theatre West Virginia’s long-running outdoor productions and special events such as Sounds of Appalachia, sits just a short walk from Grandview’s Main Overlook.

From the stone observation area, visitors can enjoy one of the park’s signature vistas, where the New River bends nearly 1,400 feet below towering sandstone cliffs. The overlook has long been considered one of the most photographed places in southern West Virginia.

Just beyond the amphitheater, the Grandview Rim Trail begins its scenic journey along the edge of the gorge. A moderate, one-way trail, it stretches about 1.6 miles to Turkey Spur Overlook, passing a series of rocky viewpoints that offer ever-changing perspectives of the river and surrounding mountains. Many hikers consider it one of the finest rim walks in the National Park System.

Grandview also offers shaded picnic areas, seasonal visitor services, and easy access to several additional hiking trails, including the Castle Rock and Tunnel trails.

Those wishing to extend their visit can camp at nearby park campgrounds or use Grandview as a starting point for exploring the southern district of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, including Sandstone Falls, Glade Creek, and the communities of Beckley, Hinton, and Fayetteville.

Whether arriving for an evening of Appalachian music or a day of hiking, visitors will find that Grandview offers many of the experiences that have made the New River Gorge one of America’s most celebrated national parks—spectacular scenery, rich history, and a living mountain culture that continues to thrive.

A Partnership Celebrating Appalachian Heritage

Sounds of Appalachia is presented through a partnership among the National Park Service, Theatre West Virginia, and Friends of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

The program is supported by the West Virginia 250 Events & Educational Initiative Grants Program, which helps communities across the state commemorate America’s semiquincentennial in 2026 through educational and cultural events.

The event is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early for seating at the Cliffside Amphitheater at Grandview.

The Music Continues At Clifftop

Visitors inspired by the June 30 program won’t have to wait long for another celebration of Appalachian music. A month later, nearby Camp Washington-Carver in Clifftop will host the internationally renowned Appalachian String Band Music Festival, July 29 through Aug. 2, 2026.

Known simply as “Clifftop” among musicians, the five-day gathering draws thousands of fiddle, banjo, and old-time music enthusiasts from across the United States and abroad for concerts, workshops, contests, square dances, and nearly continuous jam sessions overlooking the New River Gorge.

The Sounds of Appalachia program is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early for seating at the Cliffside Amphitheater at Grandview. Additional information and a complete schedule of park programs are available from the National Park Service.
