King Richard II was the last legitimate Plantagenet monarch of England’s main line, ruling from 1377 until his forced abdication in 1399. Ascending the throne at just ten years old after the death of his grandfather, King Edward III, Richard’s early reign was defined by the instability of a minor monarch. His early years were famously marked by the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, a massive uprising that the young king personally helped defuse with remarkable, precocious bravery.
However, as Richard grew into adulthood, his firm, unyielding belief in the divine right of kings heavily dictated his political decisions. He increasingly favored a narrow circle of court allies while actively alienating the country’s prominent barons and traditional nobility.
His autocratic style of governance reached a critical turning point when his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, accused a fellow noble of high treason. Rather than allowing a standard trial by combat to settle the matter, Richard intervened at the very last minute, choosing instead to banish Bolingbroke from the kingdom. The political situation rapidly deteriorated following the death of Bolingbroke’s wealthy father, John of Gaunt.
Desperate for funds to finance a military campaign in Ireland, Richard made the fateful error of seizing Gaunt’s massive estates and stripping the exiled Bolingbroke of his rightful inheritance. This direct assault on noble property rights deeply alarmed the English aristocracy, instantly uniting them against the crown.
Taking advantage of Richard’s military absence in Ireland, Bolingbroke invaded England in 1399 with a small force that quickly snowballed into a massive army of disgruntled noblemen. Returning to a kingdom that had entirely turned against him, a politically isolated Richard was forced to abdicate his crown. Bolingbroke subsequently ascended the throne as King Henry IV, bringing a decisive end to the direct Plantagenet dynasty and establishing the new House of Lancaster.
Imprisoned deep within the walls of Pomfret Castle, Richard died early the following year—likely through forced starvation ordered by the new regime. His tumultuous downfall and complex psychological demise were later immortalized by William Shakespeare in his historical masterpiece, Richard II.
