“Cheers” alum Kelsey Grammer bellied up to Donald Trump at the White House Thursday, calling the president “very chipper, very positive and uplifting” while noting his “heart” is invested in the “American experiment.”
Earlier in the week, the “Frasier” star appeared on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” and said he prayed for Americans unhappy with Trump “to find a decent sentiment in their hearts about this country, about the people who run it these days.”
Grammer’s support for Trump is no secret, but this week it was writ large at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Thursday as he promoted his new movie “Young Washington,” in which he plays Lord Fairfax.
He told reporters he stopped by to talk to “the big guy” (which he did for a reported hour).
In a clip shared by Sam Lisker of Scripps News, Grammer was asked about Trump’s performance on bipartisanship. Grammer replied: “I think he understands … different political alignments will play out as they play out. I think he celebrates in his heart and in actuality the American experiment, which is honestly a story of two sides bashing heads all the time and finally coming out with some kind of middle ground.”
Grammer, 71, lavished praise on Trump, who has taken heat for waging war in Iran, inflation and a sickly green Reflecting Pool, among other things.
“It was fantastic today, just effervescent, fun,” the actor said. “We traded some old war stories about our lives, our personal lives, our wives, our families, and it was really nice to see him.”
He said he stopped by to “say hi to the big guy” and chirped over his demeanor in a video posted by journalist Rabia İclal Turan. “Very pleasant, very chipper, very positive, uplifting, he was the president.”
Days earlier, he attacked some critics of the president in an interview with Jesse Watters.
“There is a virus that has infected a very small number of people, I think, who just want to tear things down,” he told Watters earlier in the week. “They’ve been consumed by hatred, and of course, hatred ends up basically destroying you … I pray for them. I pray for everyone to find a decent sentiment in their hearts about this country about the people who run it these days.”
