ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Junior Caminero hit three home runs and drove in six runs, Victor Mesa Jr. added a three-run homer and three pitchers combined for 8 1/3 no-hit innings to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 13-2 victory against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

Opener Casey Legumina retired the first four batters before Ian Seymour (4-1) took over in the second inning. The pair combined to retire the first 16 Kansas City batters before Starling Marte drew a one-out walk in the sixth off Seymour.

Craig Kimbrel started the ninth with a walk to Marte, then struck out Tyler Tolbert before allowing a two-run home run to Carter Jensen to the right-field stands for the Royals’ only hit of the game.

The Rays salvaged a split of the four-game series after dropping the first two games.

Tolbert, who started at shortstop for Kansas City, moved to the mound for the eighth inning, allowing five runs on six hits.

Caminero tied a franchise record with his three home runs and registered his sixth career multi-homer game and second this season. He hit a two-run home run in the first inning and added a solo shot in the fifth, both off Seth Lugo (3-5), before going deep off Tolbert in the ninth. Mesa hit a three-run shot to right field in the fourth.

Tampa Bay’s Yandy Diaz extended his hitting streak to nine games with a seventh-inning double.

GUARDIANS 4, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Khalil Watson singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning for his third RBI of the day, and the Cleveland Guardians survived a ninth-inning collapse to beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Wednesday.

In a game delayed by rain at the start for 2 hours, 40 minutes, Watson singled to left off Grant Taylor (2-1) to score automatic runner Petey Halpin from third and help Cleveland tie Chicago for the AL Central lead.

Braden Montgomery and Randal Grichuk homered off majors saves leader Cade Smith with two outs in the ninth to tie it for Chicago. Smith had two of his three blown saves this season in this series.

Shawn Armstrong (2-1) got the final out of the ninth and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th.

Guardians starter Tanner Bibee threw six shutout innings, scattering three hits to extend his streak of scoreless innings against the White Sox to 15.

Watson, who hit his first career home run Tuesday night, opened the scoring in the sixth with a two-run, bases-loaded single off Erick Fedde.

White Sox catcher Kyle Teel had his first hit of the season in his second game since returning from a hamstring injury suffered playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic, and scored on Montgomery’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Joe Rock walked Guardians catcher Patrick Bailey with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, scoring Halpin.

BREWERS 6, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) — William Contreras and Jake Bauers hit back-to-back homers in the third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.

Milwaukee improved to a season-high 20 games over .500 at 49-29. The Brewers have won 18 of the last 21 series against the Reds.

Cincinnati (37-42) was swept at home for the first time since Aug. 16-18, 2024 against the Royals, a streak of 44 consecutive series.

The Reds loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Joel Kuhnel, who got Dane Myers to ground into an ending 6-4-3 double play.

It was Kuhnel’s third save of the season. Chad Patrick (5-3) got the win.

Brewers left-hander Shane Drohan pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings with three walks and five strikeouts on a career-high 98 pitches.

Contreras’ two-run home run off Rhett Lowder — a line drive that eluded the glove of leaping Dane Myers in center — put the Brewers ahead 2-0.

Bauers followed with his team-leading 14th homer. It was the first time this season the Brewers hit back-to-back homers.

Lowder (3-5) allowed three earned runs on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts on a season-high 100 pitches.

Blake Dunn’s RBI double in the sixth cut the Brewers’ lead to 3-1. With runners on second and third, Garrett Mitchell made a diving catch on Elly De La Cruz’s sinking liner in center to end the inning.

Milwaukee extended its lead to 6-1 in the seventh on pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn’s bases-loaded double off Sam Moll which drove in three runs.

Eugenio Suárez had an RBI double in the seventh and Spencer Steer hit a two-run home run, his 13th, in the eighth off Craig Yoho to make it -5.

Pirates place Horwitz on 10-day IL

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates placed first baseman Spencer Horwitz on the 10-day injured list Thursday because of a left hamstring injury.

Horwitz was injured Wednesday night in an 11-1 win over the Seattle Mariners. He felt a grabbing sensation in his leg while grounding into a double play in the third inning. He was removed for a pinch-hitter an inning later.

In 74 games this season, Horwitz is hitting .280 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs.

Infielder Jack Brannigan was recalled from Double-A Altoona. The 25-year-old has yet to make it in the big leagues after being selected in the third round of the 2012 draft from Notre Dame.

The Pirates and Mariners were set to finish a three-game series on Thursday.
