Oprah Winfrey is sharing a previously untold story about Whitney Houston—one that almost became tabloid fodder. Speaking during a conversation at the Cannes Lions festival, Winfrey revealed that Houston once fell off the stage while performing on The Oprah Winfrey Show. According to the media icon, the incident happened after the singer had relapsed, and she immediately moved to shield her friend from public humiliation.
“I had such trust from ‘The Oprah Show’ audience,” Winfrey said, according to Variety. “I think it was [Houston’s] last show with us, and she had gone back on drugs.” Recalling the moment, Winfrey said Houston “fell off of the stage” while performing before a live audience.
The revelation offered a rare glimpse into the relationship between Oprah Winfrey and Whitney Houston, whose friendship extended far beyond the interviews that millions watched on television.
Their bond was perhaps most evident during Houston’s deeply personal 2009 sit-down with Winfrey, which came after years of speculation surrounding the singer’s marriage and substance abuse struggles. The two-part interview drew more than 11 million viewers and remains one of the most-watched conversations in the history of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Before that interview began, Winfrey said she stopped production to speak privately with Houston. “We did the whole, ‘Hey girl, how you doing?’ greeting thing and then I stopped the cameras and I went behind stage and I said, ‘So tell me, what do you want to happen here? And I’m gonna tell you what I want to happen here,’” she recalled. “And that was one of the most powerful interviews.”
When Houston later returned to the show to perform, Winfrey feared that photographs of the accident would only deepen the scrutiny surrounding the superstar. “I knew that if that story got out…she would be destroyed by that,” Winfrey said. “And so even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not.”
She added, “That would not happen today, I can tell you that.”
Houston died in February 2012 at age 48 after an accidental drowning, but Winfrey remained close to those she left behind. She attended the singer’s private funeral and later interviewed the singer’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and other family members.
Bobbi Kristina famously chose Winfrey for her first television interview because she trusted the woman her mother had considered a friend.
