The marriage of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, though initially a political strategy to unite the warring Houses of Lancaster and York, evolved into a genuine and affectionate partnership that stabilized the Tudor dynasty. Their union was celebrated on January 18, 1486, at Westminster Abbey, effectively ending the Wars of the Roses and merging the red and white roses into the singular Tudor rose symbol. Over their 17-year marriage, they had seven children, including the future Henry VIII, and were noted for their mutual respect and lack of public scandal.
Tragedy struck the royal family in April 1502 with the death of their eldest son, Prince Arthur. In a poignant moment of shared grief, the couple comforted one another, with Elizabeth reminding Henry they still had other children to care for. Hoping to secure the succession further, Elizabeth became pregnant again but faced a difficult confinement at the Tower of London. On February 2, 1503, she gave birth to a daughter, Catherine, who survived only a few days.
Succumbing to a postpartum infection, Elizabeth died on February 11, 1503—her 37th birthday. Her death left Henry VII inconsolable; the king, known for his stoicism and thrift, retreated into deep seclusion and spent a lavish sum on her funeral. He never remarried and was buried beside her in the Lady Chapel of Westminster Abbey following his death six years later.
