With the full force of both studios’ marketing departments at its back, Supergirl failed to launch at the box office this weekend. The standalone super-flick starring Milly Alcock as the titular heroine didn’t bomb, but its $38 million domestic and $68 million global takes (per Rentrak) fall short of both projections and pricey budgetary estimates.
Supergirl was forecast to to earn at least $50 million from its Stateside opening this weekend. That was already concerning, given the film’s estimated budget of $170 million — well within normal range for a tentpole superhero title, but high for a character that hasn’t been tested solo on the big screen in over 40 years. It should be noted that 1984’s Supergirl, starring Helen Slater, bombed at the box office, recouping only $14 million of its $35 million budget and earning costar Faye Dunaway a nomination for Worst Actress at the Razzies.
Milly Alcock’s take on the character was introduced in last year’s Superman, which represented a much-needed hit for D.C. and Warners. But this follow-up earned less than one third of its progenitor’s domestic opening take of $125 million.

Toy Story 5, meanwhile, has had no trouble learning to fly. The fifth entry in Pixar’s beloved animated franchise blasted through a tough gridlock of competition at the box office last weekend, achieving a series-best global figure of $312 million.
Featuring the voices of returning stars Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Joan Cusack, he film added another $70 million domestically and $159 million globally in its second weekend. Its total domestic tally now stands at $297.2 million, and globally $585 million, already vaulting it to No. 6 overall from the film’s released thus far in 2026.

Elsewhere on the domestic and global charts, Obsession and Backrooms continue to keep the horror fires burning. The former relationship thriller, which was made on a sub-million dollar budget, ranked No. 3 domestically and globally in its seventh weekend, with $9.8 million and $23.4 million takes, respectively.
Backrooms, from 21-year-old Youtube prodigy Kane Parsons, meanwhile, earned $4.3 million domestically and $15.7 million globally in weekend 5. It now stands at No. 9 on the overall global leaderboard of the year with a $330 million gross, right behind Obsession‘s $370 million.
Next weekend is starting a couple days early, as Illumination and Universal’s Minions & Monsters is betting on audience buy-in with a five-day premiere planned to kick off on Wednesday.
The latest installment in the studios’ highly profitable Despicable Me franchise serves as a prequel, taking it back nearly 50 years and featuring some new voice stars (Trey Parker, Jesse Eisenberg), and some returning (Alison Janney, Pierre Coffin as the Minions). The film will duke it out for the highly coveted family audience that Toy Story 5 is currently monopolizing.
