Just once, it would be nice for an event or trip involving Mr and Mrs Psychodrama to proceed naturally and organically, with good grace. And whilst I do, in fact, feel a certain amount of empathy for Harry on the security issue (it would be hard not to, given how his mother died and how immensely protective he must feel of his young children), it’s not like the committee’s decision was a bolt from the blue. The Duke lost his legal challenge over the levels of security he and his family are entitled to while in the UK more than a year ago, so what was he expecting? For the King to step in?
What I can’t fathom is how Harry and Meghan aren’t themselves bored of the circus, drained to the point of agreeability? Why do they seem to do everything in their power to ramp things up, rather than keep the peace? Isn’t that what “adulting” is about? Biting your tongue and keeping the peace because you have kids now, and family is family?
I don’t know Harry, and he’s a very different man from the one he once was, but for years, he came across as someone who just wanted an easy life. Certainly – and I’m trying to find a kind way of putting this – he doesn’t seem likely to be the one behind all the “Machiavellian” media moves. And the quotation marks are there because most of the time, these are terribly bungled attempts at manipulating the narrative that dramatically backfire.
I can already predict that there will be more theatre to come this week. (And by the way, it’s worth noting that whilst all this is going on, the Princess of Wales is literally climbing mountains for cancer.) There will be more media acrobatics, certainly, but also contortionists at play. Perhaps not so much illusionists as delusionists. And I can put up with the tedium of it on one condition – it has to culminate in a reconciliation between the King and his youngest son.
The older I get, the more tragic I find any kind of family fallouts, and whilst (from what I’m told) there isn’t currently much hope of a rapprochement with Prince William, it does seem as though both Harry and his father currently want the same thing. Will and timing are all that any reconciliation needs to go ahead, so when those things coincide, the moment mustn’t be squandered.
Then, if the Sussex circus could take the whole immersive performance back to Montecito, I think we could all do with a break from the overstimulation.
