The Pine Bluff Convention Center marked its 50th anniversary Friday June 26th at 5:30 p.m., celebrating five decades since opening on June 27th, 1976.
Since opening, the downtown facility has served as one of Pine Bluff’s primary large-scale venues, hosting conventions, banquets, trade shows, civic events and concerts.
Over the years, it has brought nationally known performers to the city, including Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, Prince and KISS, among others, helping establish the center as a regional hub for entertainment and large public gatherings.
Beyond major performances, the center has also been used for a wide range of community functions, including civic celebrations, school graduations and other educational events, political gatherings and public forums, sporting events, indoor competitions, banquets and expos.
The Convention Center has also played a role in the broader development of downtown Pine Bluff’s event and tourism infrastructure, often coordinating with nearby venues such as the Pine Bluff Regional Park area and other civic facilities.
Its size and flexible design have long made it one of southeast Arkansas’ largest indoor gathering spaces, allowing it to accommodate regional-scale events that draw attendees from across the area.
In recent years, the facility has continued to host community programming, private events and civic celebrations, including milestone observances such as anniversary galas and other commemorative gatherings.
The anniversary celebration was hosted by Barbara Dunn and brought together local business owners, residents and officials to reflect on the center’s role in the community, including its economic and cultural impact over the past five decades. Over 300 were in attendance according to Mrs. Dunn.
During the celebration, host Barbara Dunn reflected on the Convention Center’s impact, speaking about its meaning to her personally.
Dunn also mentions how there will be a direct connecting path from the convention center to the new hotel Saracen Casino and Resort are opening, which will be a game changer for people attending or participating in events at the convention center.
Dunn was also questioned on if she plans on bringing anymore big names in soon.
During the 50th anniversary celebration, guest speaker Judge Rob Wyatt looked back on events hosted at The Convention Center in the 1980s and offered thoughts on its future role in Pine Bluff over the next decade.
We also caught up with 4th Ward Councilman Bruce Lockett and got his experiences with the Convention Center.
One of the council’s responsibilities is allocating funding for the Convention Center. We asked Lockett what he sees as the primary challenge in securing funding for the facility in the future. He closed by emphasizing the continued utilization of the facility remains one of the most effective ways to support the convention center moving forward.
Finally, we caught up with Steve Arrison, former director of the convention center from 1994-1998 before going onto be the director for the Hot Springs convention center, and he also talked about events that have happened at the convention center while he was in charge.
Fifty years after opening its doors, the Pine Bluff Convention Center remains a central piece of the city’s civic and cultural identity.
As speakers reflected on its past and discussed its future, the message throughout the evening was consistent: the facility’s next chapter will continue to be defined by how it is used, supported, and woven into the life of the community it has served for generations.
