Penélope Cruz was asked on Hot Ones about her longtime friendship with Salma Hayek
The two actresses once endured a “really crazy” Halloween on a plane that ended up having an emergency, the Ferrari star recalled

Penélope Cruz is reflecting on her longtime friendship with Salma Hayek — and their most memorable moments together.
One of them happened on a “really crazy” Halloween Cruz, 52, shared with Hayek, 59, whom she called “another sister for me” in the Thursday, July 2 installment of First We Feast’s Hot Ones.
When host Sean Evans asked for a notable memory with her costar in the hit 2006 action-comedy Bandidas, Cruz remembered “wearing clown wigs and outfits” for Halloween one year. “I don’t like clowns,” she said. “They are scary no matter what.”

The star ofThe Invite said that she and Hayek were on an airplane full of people: “Imagine, 10 of us were dressed like clowns. And then the pilot said, ‘Oxygen masks! We’re having a depressurization of the cabin,’ ” Cruz recalled.
Amid the alarming plane emergency, “stewards were running, like [holding] the whole oxygen tank,” she said. “We were very lucky, we landed safely. But that was such a crazy bonding experience.”
Cruz and Hayek had to board another plane — again, in full clown get-up — “because we were supposed to be shooting a few hours later,” the Oscar winner said.
“Of course we were late on set,” she added. “But alive.”
Cruz previously recalled the Halloween story in a 2017 PEOPLE interview.
The two actresses have remained close since bonding on the set of Bandidas, in which they played an unlikely duo becoming bank robbers.
“I was coming [to Los Angeles] for two months and I didn’t know anyone here,” Cruz recalled in a 2023 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show when describing first meeting Hayek, who “picked me up and said, ‘You’re not going to the hotel. You’re coming to my house because this is hard at the beginning and you’re going to feel very lonely.'”
Cruz will appear next in the Cannes Film Festival premiere La Bola Negra (The Black Ball),Day Drinker opposite Johnny Depp, Bunker opposite her husband Javier Bardem, and an upcoming Nancy Meyers film.

Cruz stars with Seth Rogen and Edward Norton in The Invite, directed by and costarring Olivia Wilde. In the A24 four-hander, she plays therapist Pína, half of a couple joining their neighbors for dinner — and a risqué proposition. The comedy is now playing in select cities.
