Though the NBA Finals are (thankfully) long over, there’s still some competition between Spurs and Knicks fans going around. On a recent episode of the No. 1 talk show in the U.S., a friendly back-and-forth took place between the hosts and a familiar TV personality here in San Antonio.
During the Finals, Daytime host Kimberly Crawford poked fun at Knicks fans in a video response to the show’s affiliate – Live with Kelly and Mark, hosted by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos in New York City. Showing the clip to the audience in a recent episode, Consuelos said the duo’s San Antonio counterparts “talked a lot of smack” as the two teams faced off.
“Hey, listen, we love your confidence,” Crawford said. “We really do. It’s so bold of you, so New York. But here in San Antonio, we’ve seen a few things – for instance, winning actual championships within the last 50 years. I mean, when was the last time you guys won a championship?” Daytime DJ Xavier Garcia said, “I think it was like when Nixon was president.”
Continuing, Crawford added, “Bless your hearts, it’s not gonna be Knicks in six, it’s gonna be Spurs in seven!”
Well, apparently people outside the South have begun to catch on to the meaning of “bless your heart,” because Conseulos said “Kimberly, we know what that means! … That essentially means, you know, go blah blah blah.” Ripa chimed in, saying, “Is Kimberly looking for a fight?” Truthfully, that saying can mean a lot of things, but it looks like Ripa and Consuelos did catch on.
The hosts didn’t have a chance to respond to those fighting words before the Finals ended, but Consuelos said they’re replying now. “I hope you’re convalescing in a nice way, licking your wounds, and we’ll see you next year. And Kimberly, bless your heart.”
Though the loss definitely stung, Crawford took the friendly jabs well. Commenting under a clip of the show, she wrote, “Well bless MY heart! Spurs prediction didn’t age well, but the ‘bless your heart’ was delivered with 100% Texas love.” Just like Wemby said, basketball is just a game at the end of the day – and these TV personalities have shown how to do trash talk with class.
Daytime is filmed here in San Antonio at FOX 29 KABB, but airs across the state on weekday mornings.
