While Philadelphia celebrates the Fourth of July weekend in heat wave conditions, the Phillies will travel to the Midwest, taking on the Kansas City Royals for three games at Kauffman Stadium.
It’s an unusually formatted series, with the two teams receiving a rare Friday off-day due to a scheduled World Cup soccer game in Kansas City. The series will begin the night of the Semiquincentennial on Saturday, before concluding with mid-afternoon games Sunday and Monday.
The Royals (35-53) entered the season with postseason hopes, but now begin the weekend with the worst record and run differential (-83) in the American League. While they have a middling rotation, their lineup has been bottom 10 in the game in most categories, and their bullpen is arguably the worst in baseball.
Kansas City currently has several key players on the injured list. And although shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is having another MVP-caliber year, it doesn’t seem it’ll be enough to save the Royals’ season.
Meanwhile, the Phillies (49-39) enter the series second in the National League East. They are coming off a brief four-game homestand in which they split a series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Saturday’s game against the Royals will mark the first of nine consecutive road games the Phillies will play in nine days prior to the All-Star break, which Philadelphia is preparing to host.
The Phillies and Royals last met for a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park last September. In that series, the Phillies took two out of three.
All three games will be broadcast locally. Here’s when and where you can watch the series on TV:
- Saturday, July 4, at 8:10 p.m. ET: NBC Sports Philadelphia
- Sunday, July 5, at 3:00 p.m. ET: NBC Sports Philadelphia, Peacock/NBCSN Extra (out-of-market)
- Monday, July 6, at 2:10 p.m. ET: NBC Sports Philadelphia
