Beyonce receives praise over latest song: ‘She finally gave us something we asked for’

Beyonce has released her first song in two years and her first new music since the release of her album Cowboy Carter in March 2024 – the new track is called Morning Dew (Donk)

Beyonce has surprised her fans by dropping a long-unreleased song just in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The 35-time Grammy Award-winning singer’s track Morning Dew (Donk) – her first song in two years and her first new music since her album Cowboy Carter came out in March 2024 – was released out of the blue on July 4. A press release from her representatives described the song as a “direct nod to her loyal BeyHive to commemorate the upcoming epic celebration of B’Day”.

The superstar’s second album, B’Day, was released in September 2006, marking its 20th anniversary this year. Morning Dew (Donk), which was co-written by Beyonce, Pharrell Williams, The-Dream and Darius Dixon, and produced by Beyonce and Williams, was reportedly initially set to be released as part of that 2006 LP.

The song was released alongside a lyric video that reuses two-decade-old footage shot by Cliff Watts, who also photographed Beyonce for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover in 2007.

The new release will appear on an upcoming 20th anniversary reissue of B’Day – but currently, her team hasn’t released further details about the reissue.

B’Day featured songs including Deja Vu, Irreplacable and Ring the Alarm. It was her second number one album and won best contemporary R&B album at the 2007 Grammys. It was the second #1 album for Beyonce with first week sales of 541,196 copies after its worldwide release on September 4, 2006, and in the United States on September 5, 2006.

The #1 US Billboard 200 Album chart debut was repeated internationally, including Japan, where it took less than three days to land atop the International Album Chart.

Meanwhile, Cowboy Carter saw Beyonce collaborate with country stars Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Shaboozey. The album debuted at number one in several countries became her first album to top the Top Country Albums chart.

After the album release, the 44-year-old singer embarked on the Cowboy Carter Tour, which saw her also complete a six-night residency at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June 2025.

After Morning Dew (Donk) came out today, fans were ecstatic and many took to social media to express their excitement. One wrote on X: “SHUT UP IS THIS REAL????” Another tweeted: “WHAT DO YOU MEAN BEYONCÉ FINALLY RELEASED DONK?????”

A third posted: “A surprise drop from the Queen? The BeyHive is eating good today!” Someone else shared: “It’s going to be in workout playlists, fashion week shows, and someone’s wedding simultaneously.”

One more added: “She never left, it was just dark and we couldn’t see her.. Here she rises with the sun and ‘morning dew donks’..” A fan said: “WE ARE ALL STREAMING.”

The song was released just weeks after it was announced that albums and songs from Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Chaka Khan and The Go-Go’s would join America’s audio canon. The new inductees into the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress included Taylor’s blockbuster 2014 pop album 1989, Beyonce’s era-defining 2008 anthem Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It), Chaka’s genre-blending hit I Feel for You, Vince Gill’s emotional ballad Go Rest High on That Mountain and The Go-Go’s groundbreaking debut album Beauty and the Beat.

They were among the 25 recordings entering the archive in the class of 2026, acting Librarian of Congress Robert Newlen announced in May. The selections were chosen for their |cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.”

“Music and recorded sound are essential, wonderful parts of our daily lives and our national heritage,” Mr Newlen said in a statement. “The National Recording Registry works to preserve our national playlist for generations to come.”
