Is the next big trend in Hollywood going blonde? Becoming a redhead? Nope. Celebrities with gray hair are taking over red carpets, and it’s easy to see why the color is finally being embraced. The once-verboten silver is a unique and bold hue that projects confidence and seniority. You can wear it as a streak, go allover white, embrace a witchy look, or something super refined and elegant. It’s the next frontier in beauty.
You might even consider going gray a bit mystical. (Spoiler! In the Outlander finale, for example, Claire’s hair turns white when she brings Jamie back to life because she’s fully in her healer powers. Not saying any of these celebrities can do that…but not not saying that, either.)
If you’re not ready to go all the way there yet but want to try incorporating gray into your look, there’s a process called gray blending that lets you do just that. It’s a transitional style that uses your natural grays kind of like highlights, while also preserving colorful undertones.
“In the past we have seen trends dominate fashion, such as the perm era, the highlight decade, balayage, vivid colors, and tonal work,” says Robert Eaton, technical director of Wella Professionals. “Now there is a move toward natural hair enhancement, and gray blending is the new movement in hair color.”
For inspiration, here are some celebrities with gray hair who have embraced their natural color—and look so good, they’re motivating us to do the same.
