MADISON, Wis. — The Overture Center for the Arts has received national recognition.
The performance venue in Madison announced it has been awarded the 2026 John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability (LEAD) Community Asset Award, which recognizes organizations advancing the inclusion of people with disabilities.
It also recognizes those who serve as models for others.
“We are thrilled to receive this important award from The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a national leader in performing arts education and access,” said Director of Guest Services Tom Klubertanz in a release. “Being recognized as a community asset for helping all guests feel welcome is a profound honor and a testament to the staff and volunteers who create extraordinary experiences every day.”
The Overture Center has invested in many inclusivity measures in the last five years, according to a release.
One of these efforts was its live audio description and tactile tours for blind and low-vision guests. It has also created Accessibility Hubs throughout areas of the building, where attendees can access assistive devices and tools for performances.
Overture said it’s the first performing arts center in the state to get a Sensory Inclusive Facility certification through KultureCity.
It achieved that by having all Guest Services staff and volunteers go through special training to better support guests that may have sensory processing needs and challenges.
“This recognition from the Kennedy Center affirms Overture Center’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that the arts are accessible to everyone,” said Overture Center Chief Operations Officer and Co-CEO Mike Conway. “Accessibility and belonging are central to our mission, and we are honored to be recognized for the work our entire organization has undertaken to remove barriers and create welcoming experiences for all.”
Overture will officially be recognized during an award ceremony on Aug. 13 at the annual LEAD Conference in Philadelphia, Pa.
