Some celebrities have an enduring appeal—a relatability, an air of intrigue, a gravitas that’s difficult to put into words. There’s perhaps no actor more quintessentially Men’s Journal to headline our Entertainment Special than Kyle Chandler, who carries no pretense or vanity, just radical authenticity. He absconded from L.A. to Texas in the early aughts, where he lives on a 33-acre ranch.
Contributing writer Jesse Will picked up where they last left off in 2019 to pen our cover story, “The Art of Staying Loose.” That time, Chandler says, referring to the pandemic years, “kind of shook me up.” He was stuck in ruminations.
“I wouldn’t say depression,” Chandler says. “I wouldn’t say anxiety. I wouldn’t say I was agoraphobic. A little bit of all that caused this really strange haze in the air.”

The role that pulled him out of that rut is this summer’s highly anticipated Lanterns—a DC comic franchise that’s getting the prestige crime thriller treatment.
“The old man upstairs said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna give you a gift,'” Chandler says of the opportunity to lead a superhero series at 60. “He threw me a bone, and I chewed that thing all the way through. Before I went out, I decided I’m gonna have fun. Damn the torpedoes.”
The electric Tramell Tillman graces our “Seal of Approval” spotlight with sartorial stalwarts, songs, and books he can’t put down.
This issue also gets advice and a few hard truths from the commanding presence of Ed Harris in “The Last Word.” “As you get older, every day becomes more and more precious,” Harris says. “Are you loving the people who love you? Do they know it? What are you doing with your life? How do you want to spend your time? Those are the questions you should be asking.”
If you need help with Harris’ last query, this issue packs entertainment of all stripes. “Parks After Dark” showcases our country’s best national parks to chase the cosmos, whether you want to view the Milky Way with your naked eye or dabble in astrophotography. Alternatively, plan a set-jetting trip using one of our TV- and movie-inspired itineraries in “Main Character Energy.”
More of a homebody? Pitmaster Pat Martin drops his top tips and recipes to master ribs and open-pit cooking in “Better BBQ.” Pair your feast with a batch cocktail and get under the influence of our favorite celebrity-backed spirits in “A-List Booze.”
If it’s sports that rile you up, flip to “America’s Team” to read how Cadillac finally broke into F1 against the odds, politics, and stopwatch. Or a behind-the-scenes look at the Enhanced Games in “The Unregulated Race,” which explores what happens when the rules of sport are rewritten and athletes trade bans for big payouts—all while testing the limits of human performance.
Our Gear Lab section showcases over 50 summer upgrades to keep you enthralled through the dog days, from outdoor theater essentials bringing blockbusters to the backcountry, to tried-and-tested coolers, to incredible inflatables (page 56) that will no doubt inspire you to fulfill your own version of a Wet Hot American Summer.
