You like riffs? Big, stinky, heavy guitar riffs? Sure, you do. You probably wouldn’t be reading this website if you didn’t. Here at Stereogum, we cover lots of different kinds of music, and plenty of it isn’t riff-centric. But we believe in the riff, and we hope you do, too. If you like the riff, then please allow me to recommend “Apocalypse,” the new song from Austin four-piece Porcelain.
Porcelain, specialize in a noisy, guttural form of post-hardcore. They’ve got riffs, and they’ve also got some of that grimy-ass Chat Pile bass tone working for them. Porcelain started in 2022, and they released their self-titled debut two years later. Now, Porcelain announce Today’s Minor Victories, the sophomore album that they recorded with producer Scott Evans. Lead single “Apocalypse” is an impressively jagged churn. Here’s what the band says about it:
This is a song about the loss of innocence. Growing up, the future looked so bright and promising, like we could all make something of this world for the better. But then we witness tragedy after tragedy unfold in front of our childlike eyes, and the world that we looked forward to growing up in now looks like it’s unattainable, collapsing in slow motion. Realizing that the world is full of insecure men searching for power, greed, resources, and the unquenchable thirst of violent imperialism. The future we were promised as children never came to be, and now we’re all but subjected to the systemic violence that our country was founded on.
I feel that fucking shit. Below, check out the “Apocalypse” video that Porcelain shot with director Pooneh Ghana on a Texan ranch, as well as the Today’s Minor Victories tracklist and the band’s upcoming tour dates, their first on the West Coast.
