Savannah Guthrie revealed she is taking time off from the Today show
Guthrie will be working on a new project while she’s away for several weeks
“We’re going to lose you for a minute, though,” Craig Melvin said, expressing excitement for Guthrie’s new project
Savannah Guthrie will be temporarily stepping away from her Today show duties.
The co-anchor, 54, announced on the Thursday, July 16 broadcast of Today that she’ll be off for the next “few” weeks to film a new project.
“We’re about to do it. Guys, I’m headed over to shoot Wordle over the next few weeks,” Guthrie confirmed of hosting the game show, which will be executive produced by Jimmy Fallon. “We’re going to shoot the whole season and we’re super excited.”
She added, “I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’ll probably air, I think, in the new year.”
Guthrie’s colleagues also raved about the project, with Carson Daly saying he “can’t wait” and Sheinelle Jones calling it “full circle” after remembering “when Wordle hit the Today show and we became obsessed.”
“We’re going to lose you for a minute, though,” Craig Melvin noted.
In an Instagram caption, Today confirmed Guthrie will be “off for a few weeks” to film the game show. She previously announced her participation in the project on May 11, alongside Fallon, 51. “This is very exciting, I have a big announcement to make,” Fallon said at the time. “We’ve been developing Wordle as a game show for the past two-and-a-half years with The New York Times, and it’s official: We are making Wordle Game Show with our host, Savannah Guthrie!”
“We’ve been holding this secret between us for a long time now,” Guthrie said. “And we’re going to make Wordle a game show.”

Fallon told Guthrie he’s “so happy it’s you,” calling her “someone that knows how to run a show and host it.” Guthrie teased the show as “super fast-paced and fun” and a “great family game,” which “you can watch with kids and you feel like they’re learning some things.”
Guthrie returned to the Today desk in April after the February disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie. She also took a few days off last week, in what a source told PEOPLE had nothing to do with the unsolved case of her 84-year-old mother.
On July 1, FBI Phoenix said in a new statement that there had been “several ransom notes” over the course of the investigation, some of which had yet to be ruled out. Nancy’s case “continues to be investigated as a kidnapping for ransom case,” per the statement.
The FBI is urging anyone with tips or leads to call 1-800-CALL-FBI in addition to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office number, 520-351-4900.
