Texas duo Will Taylor and Charlie Martin, aka Hovvdy, don’t make nostalgic music, but there’s a sentimental time-shiftiness that runs through their songwriting. Their latest singles, “Blast” and “Try Try Try,” from the forthcoming album Big World, are especially adept at keeping the atmosphere light and groovy even as they tussle with weightier emotions. Their newest single “You Will Go Far” is no different.
Hovvdy are acutely attuned to the strange magic of time, something to stand in awe of, grieve, and cherish all at once. Whether they’re reflecting on the past or taking stock of the present, they write with the understanding that we’ll never have enough of it. “Check in on my friends/ Tool box in his hand/ He’s a new boy man/ I’m a new boy man,” Taylor sings in the second verse. “When I check in on my friends/ See their life blossom in my eye/ Bloomy like spring time.” I mean, c’mon, the sincerity alone is about to turn me into tear soup.
