Fans who haven’t been able to catch Oh, Mary! on Broadway or in London’s West End may soon get the next best thing. The Tony Award-winning play is getting a filmed stage version, with playwright and original star Cole Escola returning as Mary Todd Lincoln. While details about when audiences will be able to watch it are still under wraps, here’s everything we know so far.
Is Oh, Mary! becoming a movie?
Sort of. Rather than a traditional film adaptation, Oh, Mary! is being professionally filmed as a live stage production.
The performance will be captured at London’s Trafalgar Theatre on July 28 during the show’s West End run. The filmed production will preserve the stage version of the hit comedy, though a release date and distribution plans have not yet been announced.
Who will star in the filmed version of Oh, Mary!?
Escola will reprise their Tony-winning performance as a wildly fictionalized version of Mary Todd Lincoln after returning to the role in the West End beginning July 20.
Several familiar faces from the show’s Broadway and London productions will also appear in the filmed performance, including Bianca Leigh as Mary’s chaperone, Tony Macht as Mary’s Husband’s assistant, Giles Terera as Mary’s husband, and Michael Urie as Mary’s teacher.
Sam Pinkleton, who directed both the Broadway and West End productions, will also helm the filmed version.
When will the Oh, Mary! movie be released?
There’s no release date just yet.
While producers have confirmed that the July 28 performance will be filmed for a future release, they have not announced when—or where—the stage film will be available to watch. Fans will have to wait for more details.
What is Oh, Mary! about?
Written by Escola, Oh, Mary! reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination through a playfully fictional lens. The comedy became one of Broadway’s biggest breakout hits, earning widespread acclaim before transferring to London’s West End. It also took home two Tony Awards.
In a 2024 interview with ELLE, Escola explained that although the play is centered on Mary Todd Lincoln, the character is deeply personal to them.
“As soon as I get on stage as Mary Todd Lincoln, I am just having the time of my life,” they said. “Writing-wise, [Mary] is me, but in the way that all the characters that I write are me. Even Abe is me and all the other characters in the play are me. I’ve felt all of the things that [Mary] feels, and especially the having dreams that are embarrassing.”
