Today Show co-host Savannah Guthrie has revealed she is taking an extended break from the morning program to pursue another professional commitment.
During her segment on the Thursday, July 16 broadcast of the Today Show, Savannah announced she will be stepping away for several weeks to film ‘Wordle the Game Show.’ The program is a prime-time television version of the popular word puzzle game Wordle and is slated to debut on NBC in 2027.
On the broadcast, Savannah explained, “Yes, we’re about to do it, guys. I’m headed over to shoot Wordle over the next few weeks. We’re going to shoot the whole season, and we’re super excited. We cannot wait for everyone to see it.”
Jimmy previously expressed his admiration for Savannah and explained why she was the ideal choice for the hosting role. He said, “We were looking, we’re like, ‘Who’s the perfect host for this? We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it.’ And we did the pilot, and you are amazing.”
The program will feature contestants competing in a rapid-fire format to crack 5-letter word puzzles for monetary rewards.
The Wordle puzzle game, enjoyed by millions daily, initially debuted in 2021 and was acquired by The New York Times in 2022.
The upcoming program is set to be produced in Manchester, England, requiring Savannah to temporarily step away from her position on the Today Show to make the trip abroad.
Savannah is normally stationed in New York as The Today show is broadcast from Studio 1A in Rockefeller Center at 10 Rockefeller Plaza (between 48th and 49th Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues) in New York City. The 54-year-old lives in an expansive townhouse in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood with her husband Michael Feldman and her two children.
This follows Savannah’s previous departure from the Today Show for a two-month break after her mother Nancy initially disappeared.
Nancy vanished from her residence in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, Arizona, on the night of January 31 into the early morning hours of February 1.
As of July, Nancy has been missing and presumed abducted for nearly six months (over 165 days) with authorities still unable to identify her kidnappers. Nancy’s body has not yet been found, and an investigation remains ongoing by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and FBI.
Despite hundreds of leads, recovered doorbell security footage, ransom notes, and more, her precise location remains unknown. The Guthrie family has put forward a reward of up to $1 million for her safe recovery, in addition to a $100,000 reward offered jointly by the FBI and Tucson Crime Stoppers.
