PeepingMoon Exclusive: From Karan Johar to Hrithik Roshan, celebrity floral designer Dipti Goenka reveals what Bollywood stars are really like
From decorating celebrity homes to creating bespoke floral experiences for Bollywood’s biggest names, Dipti Goenka has quietly become one of the industry’s most trusted luxury floral designers. Over the past 17 years, her floral creations have found their way into the homes and celebrations of stars like Karan Johar, Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, while also adorning some of India’s finest luxury hotels. In an exclusive conversation with PeepingMoon, Dipti opens up about her journey, Bollywood clients and why every celebrity brings a different creative challenge.
You’ve worked with some of Bollywood’s biggest names. What fascinates you the most about the industry?
What Bollywood brings on screen with stunning foreign locations is fascinating; who wouldn’t like to be there? My dream and reality client in Bollywood is Karan.
Having worked with celebrities, who has surprised you the most with their attention to detail?
Yes, Hrithik Roshan has an eye for perfection. Once he decides and approves something for his home specially, we cannot go one inch less or more, as his eyes get used to that! That left me stunned and challenged.
Katrina too is a perfectionist. She gives all the time needed in a meeting for every detail. When we work with her, she brings out her own essence through the work.
Your work has become synonymous with luxury floral styling. What’s been the biggest learning over the years?
There are formal degrees as well, but the experience you get with buying your own flowers and foliage teaches you a lot. Dealing with clients as well as vendors both help you grow a lot. One has to be open to learning and exploring on a daily basis.
I personally made it work for me by meeting vendors on a daily basis at 5 am for the initial five to six years, till I could bring it on auto mode. Harmony and discussions with your team to get the right combinations and mindset also help. My team and I believe in surprising our clients by adding just a wee bit more. Every client is an asset that helps you get more clients.
Did your educational background help you build this career?
Botany was not a subject; in fact, I did my graduation in Arts. But I have grown up in big homes with gardens and farms, so I was always passionate about nature and all the beautiful miracles it gives us.
How would you describe your floral style?
Our designs are hands-on and spontaneous.
Flowers are seasonal. How do you maintain quality throughout the year?
Yes, the quality sometimes we get in the non-season is not up to the mark. At that time, we play a lot with interesting containers and baskets, which we design ourselves, or add some interesting brass elements and do a combination of fresh and dry flowers.
Has the demand for luxury floral styling changed over the years?
We do flowers for three main moments that can happen at any time: births, weddings and funerals, apart from many other happy and sad occasions. In India, as we see many fancier homes now than when I started 17 years ago, people want bi-weekly florals throughout the year.
