“Faint Like A Star”
There’s a joyous overload of ideas pulsating through Dom Sensitive’s new album Pop Contest, an unpredictable post-punk record that at times feels as much like a surrealist musical collage as it does DIY art punk brilliance. Inherently, it is both of those things. Due out on July 21st via Chrüsimüsi Records (Dylan McCartney, Leopardo, Dumbells), the album finds Dom Trimboli (Wireheads, Dom & The Wizards) completely detached from genre conventions, the sound of the album akin to flipping through the channels, pulling sound bites here and there before glueing it all back together. Taking influences from post-punk, hip-hop, jazz, and slacker pop, the group blend until everything is liquified, Trimboli and co. creating something engagingly mutant but as the album’s title suggests, undoubtably pop (in its own tangled way). “Faint Like A Star” is as great a starting point as any, a song that seems to evolve in real time, moving between laconic drawls, sweetened harmonies, and cartoon character studies that push and pull between synapses in our brain with a strange charm.
