Prince Harry has reportedly proposed a new royal role outside of Britain. However, the royal palace is not on board with this. For context, the Sussexes publicly stepped down as working royals in 2020 and relocated to Montecito, California. They have mostly kept their distance from Britain since then. Notably, Harry recently visited the UK to honor his commitment to next year’s Invictus Games. Not only that, the Sussexes met with King Charles at his residence on July 10.

Prince Harry reportedly privately pitched a new royal role for himself. As per sources speaking to Rob Shuter, the Duke of Sussex has suggested serving the Crown in an overseas role, preferably with Australia as his base.
One insider dished: “Meghan has no interest in moving back to Britain. Harry believes an overseas role, particularly in Australia, would allow them to serve the King while keeping the life he has built with Meghan and the children.”
As per sources, the idea isn’t new, and in fact, Harry was inspired by the Duke of Windsor. As per insiders, Harry sees this as a way to have other roles outside the palace.
However, the palace isn’t on board with the Duke of Sussex’s idea. A source said: “The Palace isn’t entertaining the idea. The late Queen made it crystal clear there would be no half-in, half-out arrangement. That policy didn’t end with her.”
Also, it is to be noted that the Governor-General of Australia is appointed by the King only on the advice of the Australian Prime Minister. Buckingham Palace is not involved in the selection of the candidate or influences the selection in any manner. Hence, King Charles, Harry’s father, possesses no direct power to help his son in any way.
Another source shared: “Harry thinks there’s a creative compromise. The institution believes the rules already exist. They’re not going to reinvent the monarchy for one family member.”
King Charles is open to the possibility of a reconciliation with his son and daughter-in-law. However, a return to the UK’s royal palace may not be possible. The source concluded: “Harry may still dream of being a working royal again. Inside the Palace, that chapter has already been closed.”
