**All 7 British Royals Who Abdicated** 👑
From medieval kings forced off the throne to a modern royal stripped of his titles, these are the British royals whose reigns or ranks ended the same way: they gave something up, willingly or not.
**Edward II (1327).** Edward’s disastrous military leadership and reliance on unpopular favorites triggered a rebellion led by his own wife, Isabella of France. Parliament forced him to abdicate in favor of his teenage son, Edward III, and he was killed in captivity months later.
**Richard II (1399).** Richard’s increasingly autocratic rule and seizure of his exiled cousin’s inheritance backfired when that cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, returned with an army and forced him to abdicate. Richard died in captivity the following year, likely starved to death.
**James II (1688).** James’s Catholicism and authoritarian style of rule alarmed Parliament, which invited his Protestant son-in-law, William of Orange, to invade. James fled to France without a fight, and Parliament declared the throne vacant, treating his flight as an abdication in all but name.
**Edward VIII (1936).** After less than a year on the throne, Edward abdicated to marry the twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson, a match the government and Church of England refused to accept. He became Duke of Windsor, and his younger brother took the throne as George VI.
**Prince Michael of Kent (1978).** Under the centuries-old Act of Settlement, marrying a Roman Catholic automatically cost a royal their place in the line of succession. Michael lost his succession rights upon marrying Marie-Christine von Reibnitz, and wasn’t reinstated until the Succession to the Crown Act took effect in 2015.
**Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex (2020).** Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back as senior working royals, giving up official duties, public funding, and use of their “royal highness” styles in public life. He retains his title and place in the line of succession.
**Prince Andrew, Duke of York (2025).** Following years of fallout from his association with Jeffrey Epstein, Andrew gave up the use of his Duke of York title in October 2025. King Charles then formally stripped him of his remaining styles, titles, and honours, including “prince” and “His Royal Highness.”
