‘In Natural Space’
“In Natural Space,” recent landscapes and other paintings by Pope County artist David Mudrinich, a professor emeritus in art at Arkansas Tech University, “drawn from many of my experiences roaming within the Arkansas River watershed,” according to an artist’s statement, opens with a 6-8 p.m. meet-the-artist reception (with light nibbles) Friday at Cantrell Gallery, 8202 Cantrell Road, Little Rock. ‘Play in Arkansas’
“Play in Arkansas,” examining how people have created joy through play and how the history of play can contribute to understanding of past and present, is on display through Dec. 15 at the University of Arkansas Little Rock Downtown, 333 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. The exhibit includes handmade and mass-produced toys, dolls and game paraphernalia, as well as a memories section, where individuals can share their personal reflections on childhood play. ‘Dreamscape Aquarium’
“Dreamscape Aquarium,” a collection of “Fish Guy” portraits (in which fish replace human heads and don clown suits, business wear, dresses, and everyday clothing) by Vershea (the nom de art of Arkansas-based mixed-media artist Gabrielle Vernor) is on display through Aug. 12 at Acansa Gallery, 413A Main St., North Little Rock. Suffragist Tea Party
The Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Avenue, Little Rock, celebrates Arkansas’ ratification of the 19th Amendment, permitting women to vote, with a Suffragist Tea Party, 2 p.m. Saturday. A selection of teas, coffees and beverages accompany a curated afternoon tea menu; attendees can win a basket of female-inspired gifts from the Clinton Museum Store.
It’s part of the Clinton Center’s America250 commemorations. Historical attire is not required but encouraged. Admission is $65, including food and beverages, via the website.
Arkansas allowed women to vote in primary elections starting in 1917, the only non-suffrage state to grant this right. On July 28, 1919, it became the 12th state to ratify the 19th Amendment, the first Southern state to do so.
‘The Singing Word’
Singer-songwriter Gene Reid and poet and fiction writer Marvin Schwartz pair up for “The Singing Word: An Evening of Live Music, Video, and Original Writing,” on Saturday at Unitarian Universalist Church of Little Rock, 1818 Reservoir Road, Little Rock. Reid will perform live and via video and Schwartz will read from his work; the program also features a performance of Schwartz’s one-act comedy “Spin Class.” Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is free but there is a suggested $5 donation. Interactive ‘Rocky Horror’
A 40-city “Spooktacular” tour of an interactive “Rocky Horror Picture Show” experience, featuring a screening of the original, unedited film alongside a live local shadow cast performing in sync with the movie, will be onstage at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at Little Rock’s Robinson Center Performance Hall, 426 W. Markham St. at Broadway.
Nell Campbell, who played Columbia in the film and is one of several original cast members appearing on the tour (the others are Barry Bostwick, who played Brad Majors, and Patricia Quinn, who played Magenta), will be the host.
Audience members can compete in a “Spooktacular” Costume Contest for the top three best costumes of the evening. (“Sequins are encouraged,” according to a news release. “Fishnets are practically mandatory.”)
