Cowboys, chemistry and cliffhangers. Ransom Canyon had all the makings of a hit when it debuted on Netflix last year, but even its stars didn’t anticipate just how quickly viewers would become hooked.
Minka Kelly was so skeptical when the romantic Western — based on the novel series by Jodi Thomas — climbed to the top of Netflix’s rankings that she asked her team whether the streamer had placed it there to encourage more people to watch.
“When it was, like, the No. 1 streaming show, I was like, ‘Does Netflix position us at No. 1 to boost us so that people watch us? Are we really?'” Kelly tells Yahoo. “You never know. You’re a part of things and you think they’re great, and then they don’t happen or no one cares.”
That’s not the case here.
Kelly and Josh Duhamel return as Quinn O’Grady and Staten Kirkland in the second season of Ransom Canyon, out now. Picking up six months after the events of Season 1, the new episodes find Staten fighting to reclaim his family’s West Texas ranch while Quinn must choose between the small town she once tried to escape and the fast-paced life she found in New York City — including a new love interest from her time away.
Although Kelly felt that the cast and crew were making “something special” during the first season, she knew from experience that quality didn’t guarantee an audience.

“It’s just kind of like lightning in a bottle, and all the stars aligned,” she says. “It did feel different than a lot of other things I’ve been a part of. Working with Josh did feel [like] magic.”
Duhamel was cautiously optimistic too.
“You never set out to make something crappy,” he jokes. “The hope is always that it’s going to be a massive success. The truth is that it’s a really hard thing to do. So many things have to come together. It has to sort of fit into the zeitgeist of the moment.”
He believed Ransom Canyon had a chance because the world felt “authentic” and “lived-in.” But after decades in the business, he knew better than to try to predict what viewers would embrace.
“When it does [connect], you just count your blessings,” he says, “because they’re few and far between.”
Part of the show’s appeal is built into its structure. Every small-town secret, family rivalry and romantic complication leaves viewers with another reason to click “next episode.”
The show also arrived amid a broader cultural obsession with cowboys. Western influences have spread beyond television into music and fashion, offering audiences an idealized escape into wide-open landscapes and a seemingly simpler way of life.

Kelly believes that fantasy is especially appealing at a time when the real world can feel overwhelming.
“Life is really hard and complicated, and there’s a lot of really scary stuff going on,” she says. “There’s something about escaping into the sort of simplicity and the innocence of getting back down to the simple things that really matter, which is home and relationship and family.”
With its sweeping scenery, horses, family drama and central love story, Kelly says the series offers viewers a cozy way to switch off.
“It feels good, at the end of a really complicated day, to just come home and have something comforting to sink your teeth into,” she says. “It’s a really sexy show. It’s a really beautiful show. I think it just sort of has everything for everybody.”
For Duhamel, the Western setting carries a sense of timelessness.
“It harkens back to a simpler time, when it was just these people making it work out here in the West,” he says. “That could be 1776 or it could be 2026.”
Watching Ransom Canyon, he says, feels “like an old pair of jeans.”
That back-to-basics quality mirrors Duhamel’s own life. When he first read the script and spoke with series creator April Blair, he was at his cabin doing what he describes as “a bunch of ranchy things.”
“I was actually literally on my tractor that day,” he recalls. “I was kind of in that mindset anyway, and I knew that I could really understand this guy.”
The series wouldn’t work, however, without viewers buying into the long-simmering romance between Staten and Quinn. Kelly says her connection with Duhamel felt natural from the beginning.
“Chemistry just sort of is this unexplainable, magical thing that either works or doesn’t. It’s either laborious or it’s not,” she says. “Right away with Josh, it just felt effortless.”
Kelly describes Duhamel as her “buddy” and says she feels safe enough to look to him for reassurance when she questions a performance.
“There will be times if I’m insecure and I’ll look at him like, ‘Was that OK?'” she says. “He’ll just give me a nod, like, ‘You’re good, kid.'”
That trust has helped them ground a story that could easily tip into melodrama.
“There are two versions of the show, really,” Duhamel says. “There’s the one version that could feel a little bit melodramatic. We really didn’t want to make that. We wanted to make something that felt really relatable and really real.”
Now two seasons into the series, Duhamel and Kelly also find themselves among the veterans of an ensemble that includes younger actors Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing and Jack Schumacher. Duhamel says he doesn’t offer unsolicited career advice, preferring to lead by example.
It harkens back to a simpler time, when it was just these people making it work out here in the West.
“I mostly encourage them,” he says. “I just try to set a good example: Show up on time, prepared, ready to go and fully invested.”
Not that his younger costars appear to need much guidance.
“These kids, I swear to God, are more mature than me,” Duhamel says. “They don’t party. They all hang out. They show up. They’re always in good spirits. They love the show, and they’re all in on making the best show that they can make.”
Kelly has happily embraced her place as the show’s “Mama Bear,” though she also believes the older actors may have more to learn from their younger costars than the other way around.
“They’re so much smarter than I was at that age,” she says. “It really sort of excites me to see who they all are in a few years. Sometimes I’m blown away by young people today. Just like, ‘God, you guys are so much smarter than I was at that age.'”
Kelly knows something about growing up as part of a close-knit television ensemble. This fall marks the 20th anniversary of Friday Night Lights, the beloved drama on which she played high school cheerleader Lyla Garrity.
“She was young and figuring it out and following what she thought was her heart,” Kelly says. “I don’t begrudge any young person their messiness. I think that’s how we all learn.”
Two decades later, viewers continue to approach her with “so much heart and excitement and passion” for a series that struggled to survive during its original run.
“I’m like, ‘Where were you guys when we were filming?'” she jokes. “We barely made it every season. We were about to be canceled every season because no one was watching.”
As for where Lyla might be now? Kelly sees more than a little of her in Quinn.
“This is the adult version,” she says, “the still-quite-messy adult version of Lyla.”
