A new promotion from Sony spotlighting its LX3 vinyl record turntable sparked renewed backlash from PlayStation fans frustrated and disappointed with the company’s move to end physical media on the games side.
In January 2028, Sony will end support and manufacturing for physical copies for all new PlayStation games. Yet the love of physical media is alive and well in a new post from the company, which, like everything else Sony posts right now, has become a lightning rod for criticism.
“Rediscover the warmth, detail, and ritual of vinyl with the LX3 Turntable,” Sony implores. “Drop the needle, press play, and enjoy music the way it was meant to be heard.”

The responses to the post are about what you’d expect. Game preservation group Does It Play? writes, “Apparently, physical media is worth supporting even if it is a small niche. PS games are much bigger than vinyl. Yet for some reason, they feel the need to kill gaming culture for profit. Shame!”
“If you can do physical for music, you can do it for games,” replies another user.
“So physical media is cool again… as long as it isn’t game discs?” says a third.
Noted PlayStation and FromSoftware sleuth Lance McDonald sums it up with his reply: “Ahahahahahhaahahhaahahahhaahhahahaahhahaha.”

The irony is that the mounting support for vinyl records and waning support for physical games are largely driven by similar factors but to different ends, even though a non-trivial number of consumers in both spaces love physical media.
A larger and larger percentage of game sales are digital following overwhelming audience migration, and Sony stands to make a lot more money per sale off digital copies. Ending physical PlayStation games will also drive more users to its in-house store, furthering its control over the sales pipeline.
The market for vinyl records, meanwhile, has shown impressive recovery and growth in the past five years or so, and music companies and artists love to sell their stuff physically because a single record sale is worth about a zillion plays on digital services like Spotify.
The mediums are distinct and their markets are wrestling with different forces, but there’s something to be said for just how music, so thoroughly digitally commodified, got into the position that actual record sales are now treated as an oasis.
Pertinently, vinyl records are still supported by a relatively small but enthusiastic market that’s willing to pay for something refreshingly tangible – exactly the sort of audience that, many experts have argued, physical games could sustain if supported. As someone who owns a lot of video game vinyl, specifically, I’m comfortably in this camp.
But demonstrably, Sony doesn’t see that audience as relevant enough to outweigh the potential gains of a digital-only future, which absolutely, positively will not lead to enormous knock-on effects or access issues.
