Kelly Ripa Misses ‘Live’ After Undergoing Surgery: Details

Mark Consuelos shared some surprising news with Live With Kelly and Mark viewers on Monday, July 27.

Kevin Jonas joined Consuelos on the daytime talk show’s Monday episode, stepping in for Kelly Ripa. “Filling in for Kelly today is Kevin Jonas! Thanks for flying the plane with me today,” Consuelos exclaimed. Jonas replied, “I’m so excited.”

Consuelos revealed that Ripa’s absence is due to a recent medical issue. “Kelly sends her love. Kelly had a little bit of — well, it’s not a little — a gum graft surgery,” he explained. “And her dentist said five years ago, ‘You can do it in about five years.’ And she joked, ‘I didn’t think I’d still be on the air in five years.’”

While Consuelos noted that Ripa is “doing well” and “doing great,” he said she’s “not allowed to talk” amid her recovery. “Wow. That’s gotta be the hardest thing that she’s ever done,” Jonas quipped.

Consuelos said he’s been “trying to keep her to follow the rules, follow the directions.” Jonas jokingly asked if Ripa uses a bell to alert Consuelos when she needs help, but Consuelos clarified that they communicate via text.

“There’s a list of things that you’re not allowed to do — talking, she has to eat soft food, you can’t suck out of a straw,” Consuelos detailed. “You can’t examine it, which means pulling down the lip. And so, last night, she’s like, ‘Can you look?’ I’m like, ‘I’m not pulling your lip down.’”

Jonas went on to ask, “Is there pain?” Consuelos replied, “Yeah, it’s painful. But she famously doesn’t feel pain. When she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t really use the Novocain. But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.” Jonas wrapped up the topic by stating he is “wishing her well.”

At the end of Monday’s episode, Consuelos confirmed that Jonas will be back on the show the next day. Consuelos did not reveal when Ripa will be back in the Live studio. Ripa, for her part, has not addressed her medical leave via social media.

While Jonas is best known as one-third of the Jonas Brothers, he is no stranger to hosting TV shows. In addition to guest-hosting Live a handful of times in years past, he famously co-hosted the ABC reality show Claim to Fame with his youngest brother, Franklin Jonas. The series, which is currently on an indefinite hiatus after three seasons, saw the relatives of celebrities compete in challenges to take home a $100,000 prize.

Jonas will soon return to the small screen with the new movie Camp Rock 3, which premieres on Disney Channel and Disney+ next month. The franchise’s latest installment will see the Jonas Brothers’ fictional band, Connect 3, return to the titular camp to find an opening act for their tour.
