Anima: Theater of the Feminine Underground will take audiences on a journey of storytelling, artistry, and transformation at 7 p.m. Feb. 6-7 at Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara.
Born from a desire to harness the creative process as a tool for healing, Anima serves as a platform for women to share personal stories that illuminate life’s profound moments.
The ritual performance art collaborative is directed by Teagan Rose and assistant directed by founder Lisa Citore.
“Creativity has always been a primary vehicle for me to do my healing work,” said Citore, the visionary behind Anima since its inception in 2017. “It’s helped me turn wounds into wisdom, and I wanted to bring this powerful tool to women in our community.
“Each show creates a resonant field of Anima — the feminine aspect of the soul — not only for participants but for the audience as well. It’s a ritual for the collective, with each woman’s performance becoming her own ritual space for healing.”
This year’s performances will feature stories told through a variety of artistic mediums, including dance, music, spoken word, poetry, comedy, and ceremonial rituals. They will explore such topics as vocal empowerment, death and rebirth, grief, identity, motherhood, partnerships, and pleasure.
“It’s a particular kind of theater magic when the stage is remembered as an instrument for the metamorphosis of our psyches and souls,” said Rose, who is directing the 12-year-old show for the third-time.
“My role is to remind the artists of their inherent capacity to create and alchemize while holding the clarity of the vision strong, even when the beautiful messiness of the process challenges us,” Rose said. “I keep coming back to Anima because of the healing it continues to bring — it’s a powerful space for transformation.”
