The artist BANKS is set to release a new album soon, and I’ve been listening to her latest track, Love Is Unkind, from that upcoming project.
One fan summed up the impact of her music perfectly in a YouTube comment:
“Every time she drops an album, that era of my life just hits different and is so memorable.”
Wow. That’s no small praise. So, what is it about BANKS’ music that evokes such a strong reaction?
The first thing that stood out to me about Love Is Unkind is its immaculate production. Every sound feels intentionally placed, working together seamlessly to shape the song’s identity. The layered bass lines, soaring synths, robotic vocal loops, and finely tuned drums—everything is crafted with precision. I love production-heavy songs, but more isn’t always better unless you know what you’re doing. BANKS and her collaborators clearly do.
The music video for Love Is Unkind places BANKS in what appears to be her home. If this song is any indication, it seems like she practically lives in her studio. Or maybe she just has a studio for a home. Either way, the video is solid—nothing groundbreaking, but it adds to the song, which is always a plus.
This track feels organic and deeply connected to her fans. I’ve always found it difficult to tell whether major artists are fully steering their own creative vision or if their teams have a heavy hand in shaping their work. But in the end, does it really matter? If the music is good, that’s what counts. And Love Is Unkind is very good.
As a new BANKS listener, I’m now eagerly anticipating her upcoming album, Off With Her Head, set for release on February 28, 2025. If you haven’t already, give Love Is Unkind a listen—it definitely gave me a boost of energy!
